What is the Key for Memorising for Learning?
- Keywords/Tags:
A frequently asked question at my Study Skills and Memory Training Workshops is "What is the key to remembering for effective learning?"
My initial response would be to provide a succinct list of key 'memory essentials' rather than name 'the key' one. The reason for my reluctance in naming any one step or strategy or memory technique is not that I don't have a preference, it's rather that I don't want the baby thrown out with the bath water."
So, assuming that you, the reader understands that the key is part of a matrix of keys which work together to achieve long-term memory and that, on its own, it will provide only short term benefits as it only the first step ... (I hear the readers ranting, "we understand, we understand, give us the key!")
THE KEY:
In the preparation phase, ensure that you have created a structure or framework for the information that you want to recall at a future time. This framework is critical for your brain to associate, connect and locate concepts and images.
Naturally, a Mind Map will provide the ideal structure.
Invest a decent amount of time thinking about the main branches of your Mind Map. The branches should be relevant and logical for the body of information that you want to memorise.
The key is to work out your structure BEFORE you study the material.
