What is reading ??
- Keywords/Tags:
Reading is usually described as
“Getting from a book what the author intended”
“Assimilating from the written word”
There are actually 7 components in reading ...
- Recognition of alphabetic symbols
- Assimilation -Physical process by which light is reflected from the word, received by the eye and transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve.
- Comprehension (Intra-Integration)Linking together of all parts of the information being read with all other appropriate information (words, figures, concepts facts, pictures).
- Knowledge (Extra- Integration)Process by which the reader brings the whole body of previous knowledge to the new information being read, then making appropriate connections. (analysis, criticism, appreciation, selection and rejection of information).
- Retention - Basic storage of information.
- Recall - Ability to retrieve stored information!
- Communication - The use to which the acquired information is immediately or eventually put. (written and verbal communication as well as expression)
Importantly – Reading is aboutThinking
