Mind Maps improve self esteem of Primary School children

Jennifer Goddard's picture

Did you know… Improving memory and using Mind Maps improves self esteem.

“Grade 5 literacy support students were introduced to memory techniques to illustrate that they possessed the ability to remember. This was necessary as they all thought they had “bad brains”.

They would say “my brain is not as good as so and so’s”. So we said “Your memory is as good as anybody else’s, I am going to show you how you can prove it”.

The students were given small tests to remember a list of twenty words and the majority could recall 5 or 6 words. Then they were showed how to link the words and make associations. The students grouped the words on a Mind Map and were encouraged to use images rather than words. "

"We put the words into categories, ones that belonged together and Mind Mapped them onto a basic ordering idea (a main branch).

They all got 19 to 20 correct and they were absolutely blown away.

You can see them thinking “Oh my goodness, may be I am not as stupid as I thought I was”.
It was a really powerful event".
